Choosing pantry containers that fit your food
Pick sizes and shapes around the ingredients you keep, rather than the appearance of a matching set.
Check your usual packet sizes
List the cupboard ingredients you replenish regularly and note their typical packet sizes. Different foods occupy different volumes, so a container’s litre capacity alone cannot guarantee a whole packet will fit. Check any ingredient-capacity examples from the manufacturer and leave room for comfortable scooping. Consider whether you need to finish an old packet before adding a new one.
Measure the shelf and the opening
Measure shelf height, depth and usable width, allowing for door hinges and other fittings. Leave space to lift or remove a container without scraping the shelf above it. Think about where it will sit during cooking. A deep container may use shelf space neatly but make the contents harder to reach. Choose shapes that fit your cupboard and are easy for you to handle.
Keep information with the food
When decanting, retain the ingredient’s relevant label information, including dates, allergens and cooking instructions. A simple label or a saved part of the original packaging can help. Keep different products clearly identified, particularly where similar-looking ingredients could be confused. Avoid topping up a partly used container indefinitely; arrange a routine for emptying, cleaning and drying it as appropriate.
Start with the ingredients used most
Try two or three containers for your most frequently used staples before replacing every packet. Check the lid mechanism, seal-care instructions and how comfortably you can open it. Do not assume storage containers are suitable for microwaves, freezers or hot food unless their instructions say so. Choose replacements only when the first few have proved useful in your actual cupboard.
