How to organise a small kitchen

By The Clever Home Guide · How we research our guides

Make everyday cooking easier by arranging what you already own around the jobs you do most.

Follow one ordinary meal

Before buying organisers, watch how you prepare breakfast or dinner. Notice the drawer you open repeatedly, the utensil you cannot find and the worktop you clear every time. These are better starting points than trying to make every cupboard look the same. Put the items you reach for together: mugs near your drink-making area, preparation tools near your chopping space and washing-up supplies where you clean.

Give useful space to useful things

Empty one cupboard at a time and group its contents by purpose. Keep frequently used items within comfortable reach, with occasional serving pieces elsewhere. Remove empty packaging and items you no longer use before deciding how much storage you need. Leave space to take something out without dismantling a pile. A tidy shelf is less helpful if every meal begins with moving three bowls.

Measure before adding organisers

Record usable width, depth and height inside drawers and cupboards. Hinges, drawer runners and shelf supports can reduce the space available. A cutlery organiser also needs enough height for the handles above it. For nesting bowls, check the dimensions of the whole set when stored. Cardboard cut to the organiser’s footprint can help you see what space it will take before ordering.

Keep one clear preparation area

Choose a section of worktop that stays available for food preparation. Store infrequently used appliances rather than leaving everything out. Keep appliance ventilation and clearance as specified in the manual. Try your revised arrangement for a week before buying anything. If the same problem remains, choose one item that solves it, rather than a matching set for the entire room.
