Starting a smart home: what to check first
Choose a task you want to make easier, then check the setup and ongoing costs before buying connected devices.
Video doorbells
Check Wi-Fi reception at the front door, space for the mounting plate and whether you want battery charging or compatible wiring. The Ring models in our comparison provide live view without a paid recording plan; saving and reviewing recorded video needs a subscription after any trial. Check indoor chime requirements separately.

Alexa devices and voice control
Decide whether you want a speaker, a clock display or a built-in smart-home hub. Echo Spot is not a doorbell-video screen. Check the exact model’s connections and each accessory’s compatibility. Alexa+ features and subscription terms depend on Amazon’s UK rollout and your account; music services can also cost extra.
Smart lighting
Our bulb comparison uses three B22 bayonet models, so check your fitting before ordering. App dimming is different from a wall dimmer: these bulbs should not be used with a dimmer switch. Keep power on for connected controls. Wi-Fi bulbs can work through their own app without a separate hub, while Matter use needs a compatible controller for your chosen ecosystem.

Smart plugs
Check the UK socket format, Wi-Fi band and appliance load restrictions. Decide whether you need energy monitoring or simply schedules. A plug can switch a suitable appliance’s power; it cannot guarantee the appliance will restart or make it safe to run unattended. Check how the appliance behaves after power is restored.

Account, app and privacy checks
Read the manufacturer’s app requirements, account controls and privacy settings. Check how to mute a microphone, manage recordings and apply software updates. Plan doorbell positioning carefully and consider who or what the camera will capture. If you rent, check permission before drilling or changing wiring.
