Follow one load through your home

Notice where washing gathers, where you sort it and how you carry it to the machine and drying area. A laundry corner should shorten an awkward step in that route. It need not contain every supply. Start by giving your existing basket a clear home and keeping the route easy to walk through. A new container is useful only if it improves that routine.

Measure the basket and the space above it

Record width, depth and height, including skirting boards and nearby doors. Allow room to open the lid, remove a liner and lift washing out. A narrow hamper may fit a gap but still be awkward to empty there. Compare the stated dimensions with a paper footprint before buying. Keep appliance ventilation, sockets, access panels and manufacturer-required clearances unobstructed.

Choose for carrying as well as collecting

Compare the hamper’s empty weight, handles, removable bag and stated load limit. Capacity in litres is a volume, not a promise that you can comfortably carry a full load. The slim SONGMICS option may suit a narrow space, while the featured Lifewit hamper offers a different footprint. Choose around your own lifting and carrying routine and check the exact variant on the listing.

Plan the drying space separately

A basket is for collecting clothes; it does not solve drying. Check an airer’s fully open footprint and load limit as well as its folded size. Leave doors and walking routes clear. Follow care labels and plan suitable ventilation for indoor drying. Avoid leaving damp clothes in a closed pile. Our clothes-airer and condensation guides explain the buying and room-use checks in more detail.

Keep supplies accessible and secure

Store laundry products in their original packaging, following their labels and keeping them out of reach of children and pets. Keep the machine controls and electrical connections accessible. Check how the hamper and liner can be cleaned and dried. Try the arrangement with one normal load before adding shelves or organisers: the useful test is whether sorting, carrying and putting away become easier.
