Choosing a reading light for your usual spot

Compare the light’s position, controls and power source with how and where you read.

Published 11 October 2026 · 2 minute read · Practical guide

Choose the reading position first

Think about whether you read at a table, on a sofa or in bed. Note where a light could sit or attach without getting in the way. A book clip, neck light and table-mounted light solve different positioning problems. Try the intended position with your usual book or device. Check whether turning pages, adjusting your posture or reaching a drink would disturb it.

Check the attachment and adjustment

For a clip light, compare the clip opening and grip with your book, reader case or other intended support. Do not assume a lightweight clip suits every hardback. Look at the adjustment range and whether the light can be directed where you need it. For a freestanding design, check its base footprint and stability on the surface you will use.

Look at controls you will actually use

Brightness settings can be useful when the room changes, but controls should be easy for you to operate. Check whether adjustments require cycling through several modes every time. Compare the listed colour settings with your preferences, without assuming a particular mode promises a health benefit. Consider the effect on someone sharing the room: position and direction matter alongside the selected brightness.

Plan charging or battery replacement

Check the power source, included charging cable and any separately required adapter. Read battery-runtime conditions: a headline duration may refer to a lower setting than you normally use. Decide where charging will happen and whether you will remember to do it. Follow the supplied charging instructions. Choose a light whose everyday operation fits your reading habit, rather than one with the longest feature list.
