A practical routine for managing pet hair at home

Combine suitable tools with a repeatable routine for the places where hair gathers.

Identify the busiest areas

Look at where your pet rests and the routes they use through the home. Focus on the sofa cushion, blanket or hallway that repeatedly needs attention. Group tasks by surface rather than trying to clean every room the same way. A fabric tool and a floor-cleaning tool may have different uses. Choose a routine you can repeat rather than relying on an occasional large clear-up.

Match the tool to the material

Read the instructions for both the cleaning tool and the surface. A reusable hair roller may be intended for particular fabrics and unsuitable for others. Test only as advised, especially on delicate materials. Do not use a household fabric-cleaning roller on your pet. Compare how the tool is emptied or maintained and whether replacement parts or adhesive refills add to its cost.

Make washable layers practical

Where appropriate, a washable cover or blanket can make a favourite resting area easier to maintain. Check its dimensions and washing instructions, and keep a spare if that fits your routine. Remove loose hair using a suitable method before washing. Follow your appliance’s instructions rather than assuming it can cope with any amount of pet bedding or hair.

Keep supplies nearby and secure

Store one suitable tool near the area you tackle most often, while keeping it and any cleaning products out of your pet’s reach. Build a short cleaning task into an existing habit, such as straightening the sofa. Inspect tools and covers regularly for wear. Choose products for their actual cleaning purpose, avoiding claims that a roller or blanket can address pet health or allergy problems.
