How to organise an under-sink cupboard

Work around plumbing, keep access clear and choose storage that suits an awkward space.

See the actual shape first

Empty the cupboard carefully and note the location of pipes, valves and other fittings. Measure the useful areas around them rather than treating the cupboard as one empty rectangle. Keep access to valves and plumbing clear. If you notice leaks or damage, deal with that before adding storage. Do not use an organiser to conceal a problem or support pipework.

Group products by task

Separate washing-up items, surface-cleaning supplies and occasional products. Keep liquids in their original labelled containers and follow the label’s storage instructions. Remove empty packaging and supplies you no longer need, disposing of them appropriately. Keep cleaning products away from food. Where children or pets could access the cupboard, choose a suitable secure storage arrangement rather than relying on a high shelf alone.

Choose containers that can be removed

A small removable tray can make regularly used supplies easier to find without filling every corner. Check that bottles will stand upright and that their caps remain accessible. Consider the combined weight of the contents before choosing a handled organiser. Avoid a tight arrangement that makes you tip bottles to remove them. Remember that trays still need occasional cleaning and inspection.

Leave room for maintenance

Leave a clear view of the cupboard base and the route to plumbing access points. Do not attach hooks or shelves to fittings that are not intended to support them. Revisit the layout after several cleaning sessions. If you keep moving one container out of the way, reduce its size or change its location. Useful organisation should make the cupboard easier to inspect as well as easier to use.
