What to check before buying an air fryer
Compare usable cooking space, your usual meals and the room an appliance needs on your worktop.
Start with the meals you actually cook
Write down three meals you would regularly make in an air fryer, including the number of people and portion sizes. A basket’s stated volume does not tell you how many portions fit in a single layer. Compare its usable floor area, shape and the manufacturer’s examples with your usual food. A large capacity can still be awkward for long or wide items.
Compare one basket with two
A single basket may suit meals cooked together at the same setting. Two drawers can be useful for foods needing different timings, but each individual drawer has its own size limit. Consider whether you would often use both or mostly cook a small portion. Look beyond the total advertised capacity: a split design does not necessarily accommodate the same dish as one larger basket.
Plan its everyday position
Measure the appliance footprint and the extra room needed to open drawers, remove baskets and follow the manual’s clearance instructions. Check that its intended position is suitable for heat and ventilation. Think about carrying it if you intend to store it after every use. A model that fits a cupboard but is awkward to lift may not suit that plan.
Check cleaning and ownership costs
Read the instructions for removable parts, coating care and dishwasher suitability. Decide whether the basket fits your sink and whether you can comfortably handle it. Include any genuinely necessary accessories in your budget, checking compatibility rather than buying a bundle automatically. Compare warranty, seller and returns information. Preset buttons are less useful than controls and cleaning requirements that fit your routine.
